Day one - June 10, 2013
O’Fallon – Amarillo, TX
Temp: 66-102 degrees
Mileage: 800 miles
Time from hotel to hotel: 13.5 hours
Oklahoma City Memorial
Besides the usual stopping for gas and bathroom breaks we
only stopped at one remarkable place: OKC Memorial. We gave a little history lesson before
getting there but a park Ranger gave us more info about other building that
were affected by the blast. It was
heartbreaking walking through the empty chairs and standing by the Survivors
Tree. Due to time, we didn’t go to the
museum but we did pick up a pamphlet.
Sullivan was interested and wanted to go to the museum.
When we left the drizzly 66 degrees of O’Fallon and
stepped out into the 98 degrees of OKC it was quite the system shock – hair
dryer comes to mind. We drove a little
further and made a pit stop. It was now
102 degrees. When leaving the gas
station Seth smiled a “This is AWESOME” smile and said he really liked the hot
winds and heat. He said it was hotter
but it didn’t feel that way. Must have
been a dry heat. Mark my words, Seth
will live in the desert and Sullivan will live on top of a snow pack mountain
when they move out. They won’t be close,
but we will sure have great places to visit!
The Nook ran out of juice somewhere around OKC so Seth had to figure out how to bide his time without (gasp!!!) electronics. A good old-fashioned hang man game started.
Seth: Waking up early.
Sully: Nothing.
Sarah: Peace in the car – very little issues.
Seth: When I couldn’t get a snack at each gas station.
Sully: Nothing
Sarah: Going to Walmart to get a new charger for Nook. The guy helping me was so high.
