Day 30-32
July 9-11
San Diego
Temp: a frigid 73
Mileage: 450
Time away from home: 48 hours
We left early for San Diego on Tuesday AM. Traffic was moving along quite smoothly till,
dunh dunh dunnnnnnh….it stopped. Or in
all actuality I was going 2.5-5 miles per hour.
I didn’t head the warnings, multiple times, to get off the interstate
and find a different way to SD. So, I
along with 1/2 the western seaboard were stuck.
Not really sure what happened up ahead, but ALL the lanes were diverted
off I-215. We saw 2 guys jump a fence to
see a man about a horse and an old lady on the side of the road saw another
horse. We saw a different guy drive in
the right hand shoulder, and scurry up the side of an embankment to a
road. When he got to the top , he got
out, bowed to the cars then flipped us off and shouted curse words! I can only say…how in the world did he drive
up that hill and can this 10 year old minivan do the same thing??? Don’t think I didn’t think about it! After 1.5-2 hours later, we were back up and
running at normal interstate speed. So,
what should have taken 4 hours took nearly 6.

San Diego - it sure was hard to navigate around your one
ways and construction. We did it though,
with a few profanities sprinkled in there – I learned it from the afore
mentioned driver. We went to Midway, an
aircraft carrier. They gave us
headphones and we could hear and read about how this ship moved and
worked. I was expecting more ohhs and
ahhs form the boys. They were
interested, but not too much.

The one ways and construction caused problems for me
finding the Coronado Bridge as well. I
can see the thing, it is long and way above the water, but where in the name of
Mike is the on ramp to it. So, I drive around and finally find it. My nav system isn’t set up and it was at this
time my van directional cues decided to go out, so I kept getting turned around
– and I have a keen sense of direction.
This was frustrating. We finally get
to Coronado and the parking was horrible.
It was 4pm, I assumed incorrectly that throngs of people would be
leaving by now and we’d have the pick of the litter. Nope.
Circle around the Coronado Hotel area a few times. Tell the kids that if I hear another “When
are we going to the beach?” one more time we are going to find the bridge again
and go the OTHER way. Whew, we find a
parking spot. I breath. Gathered our stuff and got to the beach,
finally.![]() |

In my old age of 29 I am getting more fearful of oceans
and the animals in there I can’t see…more specifically, sharks. Great whites to be exact. The
water is cold. I get in about waist
high. Boys get covered head to toe ,
DUH! The waves are crashing and it looks
like fun. But I ask them to come closer
to shore under the disguise of ‘rip tides are dangerous’ and ‘a strong current can pull you away from
the beach’ . They obliged this old lady
and happily played in the sand.
We went to Donna Hollowway's house that night and immediately they
went swimming in her pool. They had fun
with Gavin, running around, playing Legos, watching movies.
Legoland - the one
hook we had to have Sullivan “agree” to come on this trip. He was going wether he liked it or not, but
this way he was happy. We spent 10 hours
there. We paid for the aquarium as well
but never made it over there. We kept
telling him and Seth that we have to see the sea life but they were too busy
with Legoland. Oh well, they were happy.
(At least ONE of them was happy the whole day. The other woke up on the wrong side of the
bed and was mad (furious!!) at his brother for an underwear mishap. One brother was trying to pull UP the shorts
of the other but he thought the shorts were being pulled down. So, one brother was pouty and wouldn’t smile
for a few hours.) Sullivan had a great
time all day. He was in heaven. This is his Nirvana. The pictures say way more than words
can. We spent an hour building cars and
racing them (the mad brother finally got happy in this area). I think they both realized they needed space
as they were building cars in opposite corners of the build room.

Back to Donna’s house.
More swimming. The beach advisory
was warning that the rip tides were strong and not advisable to inexperienced
swimmers. I took that to mean,
inexperienced ocean swimmers. So, we
didn’t go back in the water. We went to
the beach, but since I wasn’t allowing swimming Sullivan didn’t want to get to
the shore. Seth went to the shore and
said the water was too cold to swim anyway.
The waves were huge and they would have had a great time. If Brian was with us I might have allowed
them to go out, but he wasn’t. So we
didn’t. It was cold and overcast again,
so the water wasn’t even refreshing.
The four hour drive back home was uneventful. So tired!
Best Part:
Seth - Swimming in
the ocean (1st day) and Legoland cuz we did some cool ride. (mom note: this is surprising, he acted as if
it was the worst place in the world for the first few hours)
Sullivan – Legoland, it’s obvious why I like that place.
Sarah – Seeing Sullivan’s face light up!
Worst Part:
Seth – Not being able to get in the water on the 2nd
day. It was disappointing.
Sullivan – The waves being too big so we couldn’t swim.
Sarah – Brothers fighting.
