Day 34 Trail of 100 Giants, Leap of Faith

Day 34
July 13, 2013
Trail of 100 Giants
Temp: 80-95 degrees
 Mileage: 250 miles
Time gone: 9 hours

It isn't the biggest tree by far, but the lighting was good and a lady was walking by right then.

We slowly drug ourselves out of bed to just get in the car again.  This time it was to a place Brian wanted to take boys for sometime…Trail of 100 Giants.  This is the place where you get to really climb in, on and around the sequoia trees.  It is a 1 mile-ish loop around the Sequoias.  Brian was here a few years ago and saw one tree standing.  NOW this same tree has fallen down.  How many people can say they have seen a sequoia standing, then on the forest floor?   Some lucky German tourist happened to be filming the area right when it fell.  Oh what fortune he had.  What a once in a life time experience!

Standing on tree that fell over recently.  Sullivan is in the crack to the right and below me. He was following a path under the tree and found an opening on the other side.  I crawled through it later with the video going.

Sitting in the roots of a tree that fell over some time ago.

Climbing the roots of the tree

More climbing!

After all the climbing we stopped by the super duper slow but super duper yummy McNallys burger stand to refuel.  Then off to find a spot in the river to play.  I didn’t bring my suit but the other 3 did. I was expecting to sit on the shore with my feet in the water.  But more on that later.  The current was strong.  Sullivan scooted around on big boulder and lost his footing.  He was holding to the rock with an open palm, there was nothing to grab on to.  Brian told him to let go and swim around the rock.  He did and he found his footing again.  We saw some girls jumping off a 10 ft cliff.  There was a dad there and he said, that yes, it was plenty deep and safe as long as you jump in a certain direction.  Seth jumped and had the time of his life.  Brian jumped next.  Then Sullivan conjured up the courage to do it too.   It was at this point I thought I wanted to jump – but I didn’t have a suit.  Do strip down to my underwear, cuz really how much different is it than a bikini? I think my kids would have died of embarrasement  if I did that so the only other option was jump with my clothes on.  The Chili Peppers song has been in my head for a week now.  “Butt hole surfer” line was running thru my head in San Diego.  The line now was “Its better to regret something you did, that something you didn’t do”.  Ok Anthony Keidis, I’ll do it.  The current was strong and it was challenging to make it across.  The climb to the top of the jumping off point was easy.  Overcoming the brain to allow myself to jump was HARD!  I started and stopped many times before actually jumping.  Then, I had to do it again!  Anthony was right – I would have regretted not jumping. But the 3rd and final jump I landed with my shin parallel to the water and didn’t have my nose plugged all the way.  Ouch!

Sullivan stumbled a little on his last jump.  He ran, then slipped right before jumping.  He fell to his butt.  Brian saw this.  I didn’t, thank God.  Brian was scared to death watching it as he thought Sullivan was going to hit his head before falling in.
